THE HISTORY OF
Healing Waters Church

Church History

In the year of 1914, Rev. H. A. Smith and Rev. J. A. Killebrew started services in Limestone Baptist Church. When the revival fires began to fall, and the Holy Ghost came down, discord began in the church. The Holiness people moved out into a tent and a long revival followed.

On October 6, 1914, Rev. G. Sigwalt organized the Bethel Pente- costal Holiness Church with six charter members. The charter members were: James H. Connell, David Connell, Sally Connell, Elias Lott, Elda Lott and Oliviah Jackson. Later, Oliviah Jackson Turner was sent out as a Missionary from Cody. The following people served as officers when the church was organized: David Connell and Elias Lott, Deacons; Oliviah Jackson, Secretary-Treasurer. At this time James H. Connell donated an acre of land for the purpose of building a church. A brush arbor was used until a wood Tabernacle was completed in 1916. This building served for many years.

About the year of 1927, under the direction of Rev. G. W. Parker, Pastor, the name was changed to Cody Pentecostal Holiness Church.

In 1939 to 1940, under the leadership of Rev. Harry Sandiford, a larger and more comfortable wood church was built. Rev. Sandiford also felt the need to start a church in Wacissa. This church was organized in April of 1940. After this, the services were rotated between the two churches, with the Pastor serving one Sunday at Cody and one Sunday at Wacissa. This continued until June of 1957 when the churches were separated and each received a full time pastor.

During the years between 1943 and 1957, under the leadership of Rev. G. W. Parker, electrical lights, fans and Sunday School rooms were added to the church. In 1954, Mr. & Mrs. John Chancy donated an acre of land to the church.

In the years 1957 to 1960, under the leadership of Rev. Floyd Snider, a centrally heated brick church was built.

Between the years of 1960 to 1971, under the leadership of Rev. Walter Tryon, central air was added to the church. Also added were: new Sunday School rooms, restrooms, a kitchen and a large fellowship hall, all with central heat and air. In 1965, an acre of land was purchased for the construction of a parsonage. A beautiful three bedroom, brick parsonage with central heat was then built.

In 1971 Rev. L. E. Rigdon came to serve us. Under his leadership, central air was added to the parsonage, the church has been carpeted, a new organ purchased, and $6,000.00 was the mission field in Africa. raised by the church to build a church, now under construction, on An elaborate sound system has also sored by the church. been added recently and a radio ministry is currently being sponsored by the church.

Missing history to be added later.

In 2025, Pastor Isaac Prather, after being pastor for a couple years, changed the name of the church to Healing Waters Church.

Our Beginning

Healing Waters Church was established in the early 1900s with a simple mission: to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ and serve the Healing Waters Church community with love and compassion. What started as a small group of believers meeting in a humble home quickly grew into a thriving congregation. Early services were marked by passionate worship, emphasis on the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and community prayer gatherings. Despite limited resources, the congregation grew steadily, fueled by revivals and a commitment to serving families affected by the Great Depression.

Impacting the Community

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Healing Waters Church deepened its commitment to serving the Healing Waters Church community. Through food drives, clothing ministries, and holiday outreaches, the church demonstrated Christ’s love in tangible ways.

Additionally, missions became a focal point. The church supported missionaries abroad and sent short-term missions teams to places in need of the gospel message.

Community Outreach and Challenges

The church became a cornerstone of local outreach, launching addiction recovery programs, free medical clinics, and disaster relief efforts. A devastating fire in 1999 destroyed parts of the sanctuary, but the congregation rallied to rebuild, emerging stronger. Pastor  emphasized unity and racial reconciliation, broadening the church’s impact. By 2010, the church had planted two sister congregations in nearby towns.

Modern Era and Legacy

The church hosts a thriving digital outreach, a counseling center, and a community garden. Its legacy is one of resilience, inclusivity, and unwavering faith. Annual events like the “Spirit & Fire Conference” continue to draw believers nationwide.
